August 2005 witnessed the
landfall of one of the most destructive hurricanes to hit the U.S. Mainland,
Hurricane Katrina.
The population of Baton Rouge,
LA nearly doubled in the weeks following Hurricane Katrina. Bracket Master
members, as well as many of the residents of the city, literally opened
their homes to displaced victims while assisting them to apply for
governmental assistance while providing food, shelter and transportation.
BMRT also focused on another
more local situation in the weeks after Katrina's arrival. As the population
of Baton Rouge exploded, so did the number of students attending the East
Baton Rouge Parish School System. Many schools in the parish, already
struggling to obtain additional dollars to operate, found themselves in a
position of having to educate and serve more students with a static budget.
Bracket Masters Racing Team again stepped-up to do their part to fill a need
in the local community. Money was raised and BMRT personally hand delivered
unexpected checks totaling approximately $2,500.00 to Principals of the
three local high schools that operate Auto Technology Programs and the Glen
Oaks H. S. ROTC Program. The dollars were used to purchase school uniforms
and shoes, paper, supplies, etc. for new incoming students from around the
New Orleans area.
In November 2006, the team hosted
a Katrina Toys For Kids race. The proceeds were targeted towards providing
Christmas toys and gifts for children affected by the hurricane Katrina.
Over $2000 in toys and other gifts were distributed by members of BMRT to
the kids in the Katrina trailer parks.
