                 Glen Oaks Auto Tech Program 

                                  Overview

The Auto Tech program consists of three parts; Introduction to Auto Tech,180 Hrs of classroom study and hands-on work, Auto Tech I and Auto Tech II, which are each 360 Hrs. of study for a total of 900 hours of automotive training in three years.  This is the required minimum classroom and hands-on study for the GOHS program to maintain their NATEF certification.  The program was recently recertified in December 2004.  Students leaving this program can go to work for any dealership or automotive repair facility.  The program is open to male and female students.  Students in 9th or 10th grades can enter and complete the course of study.  Any student can take the Introduction to Auto Tech class.

Auto Tech program student recruitment is closely associated with GOHS Career Day.  There were representatives from Governor Mike Foster's office, Mr. Bob Israel of the Louisiana New Car Commission, and Mrs. Marva Hawkins of Bracket Masters Racing Team.  Mr. Israel and Mrs. Hawkins spoke to the group first, followed by Mr. Lyons and the principle, Mrs. Henry.  There were several parents of prospective students in attendance.

The program has state of the art equipment and teaches students to troubleshoot and repair all types of motor vehicles.  The program owns Chrysler, GM and Ford products that have been donated by the dealerships for the students to work and practice on.

Mr. Warren Birkett, Wybirk Business Development Center, addressed the Auto Tech II class and gave them information on what to expect when they attempt to start their own business.  He gave case studies of the correct way to start and gave illustrations of what not to do.  He talked about how to finance the operation and where to seek help with money matters.  He also distributed handouts with information tailored to the class.  Mr. Birkett is a past president of Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) and is a Honorary Member of Bracket Masters Racing Team.  He is the owner/President of a successful business  and driver of a Super Stock race car.
