Johnny Wright - Super Gas Racer

While attending the O'Reilly Spring
Nationals in Baytown, TX, April 11-14, 2002, I was introduced to Johnny
Wright and his 1968 RS Camaro 468 CID BBC. It was a pleasure
talking with and learning from Johnny.
Johnny's competes in the very tough
Super Gas Class (9.90 sec. NHRA Index). The best time, off the
Throttle Stop, has been 9.22 sec. @ approximately 145 MPH.
Johnny runs in many Divisional and National Events all over the country,
as I noted by observing the "Event Participant" stickers on the
back and side windows of the car.
I was impressed by the professional
manor that Johnny went about his race preparations. The attention to
detail he took in using his log book, weather station and other tools that
he had at his fingertips was impressive. I did not see the hood off
the car all weekend (although I know he had to check something), there was
no panic to "fix things or improve something", and the car was consistent
each race. I lined up next to him on one time trial and he smoked me
on the lights and we both ran .03 over the index. He went back to
his books and weather station and in the first round he won with a 9.902
on the 9.90 index. His light was somewhere under .425 sec. on the
.400 pro tree. He also won the 2nd round by beating the #6 Super Gas
driver in the country! Unfortunately Johnny went out in the
third round when he got a little hyper and lit the "Red
Eye".
Johnny Wright is from Carthage, TX,
which is just over the border from Shreveport, LA. Johnny runs at
Hallsville, TX and Red River Raceway in Gilliam, LA.
It was a pleasure racing with Johnny and
I know I will see him at some track in the future. Johnny is having
a new 2001 Camaro built by Bevis Race Cars, which is almost ready for
delivery. Johnny can't wait to get it and start the wiring and
plumbing. God Bless You
Johnny!
