Baton Rouge
SMART Program,
Inc.
is coordinating monetary donations to help Hurricane Katrina evacuees
children that will be entering school over the next few weeks.
Children that were displaced by the hurricane are being accepted at
all area schools. The money collected will be
used to buy school uniforms, shoes and school supplies for the children. This
effort will be coordinated with three inner city public schools,
Capital High School, Glen Oaks High School and McKinley High School.

We would like to outfit 100 students with two complete sets of
uniforms and one pair of tennis shoes. We estimate it will cost
$100 per child. Each schools Student Liaison will accompany the
kids and parents as they purchase the
uniforms with the money provided. Other uses for the money will
be school supplies and student ID cards, which the students must
purchase.
Baton Rouge SMART Program, Inc. and Bracket Masters Racing Team, Inc.
have contributed
$3000.00 to this effort so far.
Sept. 12, 2005 -
Baton Rouge SMART Program
distributed checks to three area high schools. Checks were presented
to the principals at Capital High, Glen Oaks High and McKinley High schools.
Sept. 22, 2005 - Baton Rouge SMART Program paid lab fees for all evacuee
students entering Glen Oaks High School ROTC Program from money contributed by
supporters of the Katrina Relief Fund.
Quartermasters Racing Team of Clinton, MD provided assistance to Wallace
and Debra Johnson of the New Orleans Racing Team, and they
made a generous donation to the Baton Rouge SMART
Relief Fund.
Another
drag racing organization, United Black Drag Racers Association of
Milwaukee, WI, along with racers from the Chicago, IL area, have
collected a large amount of non-perishable supplies, water and
clothing for the evacuees. They delivered their supplies to the New Orleans
area.
